Whitney Meyers and her partner Tomas Dean are the parents of incredibly rare biracial twins, Kalani and Jarani. Meyers described her children on Facebook as, “Kalani (on left) is light with blue eyes and Jarani (on right) is the darker one with brown eyes. This is rare but so awesome to share.” According to experts, biracial couples have a one in 500 chance of having a set of black and white twins.
It’s unusual for biracial siblings, especially twins, to look as different as Kalani and Jarani, but there are so many genes that control skin tone and eye color, that even scientists don’t even know all the potential ways they can interact. “The physical traits you can see in a person are just a very small sliver of the genetic diversity across human populations,” Dr. Bryce Mendelsohn, a medical geneticist at the University of California, San Francisco told TODAY.
US Weekly describes how Whitney tells ABC affiliate that she was blown away when she first saw her babies. “At first when they were born, I wanted to believe it, but it’s so rare I didn’t think it’d happen to my twins!” she said. “But sure enough, they’re biracial twins!” Whitney says the twins also have different personality traits. “[Jarani’s] the chunky one. She likes to be held and cuddled more than Lani. Kalani is more energetic and, after learning to crawl recently, loves to explore. Jarani likes to stay put.”
Meyer’s said she considers the girls a symbol against racism and a sign to “love everyone equal.” She told TODAY. “You can’t look at one and not love them both. They’re the same girl, just different colors.” Dean said he understands why people are intrigued by his twin daughters but wants people to look past their physical difference. “I hope that a lot of people can see that color really isn’t a big thing. What’s important is love,” he said. “Mysterious things can happen and life is a blessing.”
