She was a soprano opera singer inspired by Leontyne Price and Martian Anderson.
She received a full scholarship at Howard University.
She sang at the second inauguration of Reagan in 1985 in spite of the fact that she was a Democrat and a nuclear disarmament activist.
In 1986 she sang at Queen Elizabeth’s 60th birthday celebration.
In 1997 at age 52 she was the youngest person to earn a Kennedy Center Honoree.
In 2014 her memoir was published: “Stand Still and Sing”.
