Directed by Adam Shankman, the comedy “What Men Want” is a revised version of the 2000’s film “What Women Want.” Instead of a chauvinistic advertising executive (Mel Gibson) acquiring the ability to hear what women are thinking, an Atlanta sports agent, Ali (Taraji P. Henson) gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts. When Ali embarrassingly gets overlooked omitted for partner in her sports agency, is told she has no clue how to connect with men, and is then infuriatingly told to “stay in her lane” by her sexist boss (Brian Bosworth), reading men’s thoughts seem to come in handy for her.
After her best friend’s bachelorette party, which includes a reading from a psychic named Sister (Erykah Badu), and a head-bumping incident at the club, she develops the ability to hear men’s thoughts. Throughout the movie she struggles to understand what it means to show all sides of herself, trust other people, and find the difference between listening to your heart and listening to your brain.
The film has great guest appearances from Kellan Lutz, Pete Davidson, Max Greenfield, Tracy Morgan, and many more. If that star studded list isn’t enough, it’s also important to note that the movie covers so much more that sexism in the workplace. Ali being not only a woman, but a black woman is an interesting twist on the original film.
Surrounding the comedy that is “What Men Want,” is a story that we’ve all heard before or are all too familiar with. I’m happy to say is on screen now, and I encourage you all to go out and watch it.
