On September 21st, Netflix released an original movie titled Nappily Ever After. Directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, the movie revolves around a woman who is trying to piece her life back together after an accident at her salon makes her realize she is not living life to the fullest. Over the past year, more and more woman undergo the big chop, aka cutting off most of their hair in an attempt to embrace their natural texture. Many celebrities like Lupita Nyong’o, Viola Davis, Issa Rae, and Keke Palmer have gone through afrocentric chops to learn more about themselves.
According to Live About, when you cut away all of your hair, you instantly have only one texture to deal with. The big chop eliminates all the stress of dealing with two different textured hair because you have only one texture to style. Whichever products and styling techniques you use, you’ll get uniform results with your 100 percent natural mane. This is also a great time to really get to know your natural texture. You’ll learn what your natural curl pattern is and have a better understanding of how to care for it right from the start. Hair, no matter what style its in, represents self-acceptance. It can be reflection of who we are and who we want to be. The time we take to get the perfect style is a reflection of our own confidence, and by cutting it off we make a sacrifice to have a careless attitude.
The big chop isn’t for everyone (and it doesn’t make you any less self aware if you decide not to cut off all your hair), but keep in mind that it can be a great moment to start over and emotionally shed. It’s hair. No one should tell you how to wear it or what to do it. Choose your own fate and find the beauty behind your mane.
