Fannie Lou Townsend sunrise 10/6/1917, Montgomery County, MS, sunset 3/14/1977 Mound Bayou, MS.
She was the youngest of 20 kids.
She started to pick cotton at age six.
She worked on a plantation.
She coined the term “Mississippi appendectomy” for the involuntary sterilization of black women (including herself) to reduce the population.
She ran unsuccessfully for Congress.
She organized Mississippi’s Freedom Summer for SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and was a representative at the 1964 Democratic National Convention.
She worked on the Head Start Program.
She worked on the Poor People’s Campaign.
Her tombstone has her famous quote: “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired”.
