I remember both the Mother’s Day Massacre where Bobby Riggs defeated Margaret Court and the match in the title movie where Billie defeated Bobby.
I remember the rhetoric and visuals, the lobber vs. the libber, both Billie and Bobby being carried in, and Bobby with the giant Sugar Daddy.
I didn’t know the back story, Bobby’s gambling addiction; Billie’s starting the Virginia Slims Circuit, and departing from the tennis association that was sexist and did not provide equal pay for women. I also did not know that Billie was involved with Marilyn and she was on the tour.
The back story was fascinating.
Emma Stone and Steve Carrell are great as Billie Jean and Bobby. Elizabeth Shue, Sarah Silverman and Alan Cumming give stand-out performances.
Best line: “someday we’ll be free to be who we are and love who we love.” We are closer, but not there yet.
Peace, love, joy, gratitude, faith, courage, compassion, and blessings.
