Activist and professor.
Preacher’s kid. His father and grandfather were ministers, as was he starting at age 17.
He refused the draft in 1951, was a conscientious objector and served 14 months in prison rather than take a student or ministerial deferment.
He was a mentor to SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee).
Followed the teachings of Gandhi.
In 1974 he led the Holman United Methodist Church in L.A..
He was portrayed in the 2013 movie The Butler.
