Evangelicals Publishes Anti-LGBTQ Statement. Former actor Ester Rolle appeared in one of my favorite films, Down In The Delta, where she was asked to go look for a “purple bell-pepper in the refrigerator.” The rationale was to distract her – for a while. The Anti-LGBTQ Statement published by some so-called “Evangelical Leaders” is a trick; a sledgehammer of hatred intended to be a wedge issue. I see it as a purple bell pepper. Its real purpose is to divide many of us who have worked together against the rising tide of white supremacy, and its more palatable version – the alt right, race-based violence, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and other sources of violence.
Since November 2016 we have seen justice movements converging across Faith traditions, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and every of the defining characteristic of identity politics. These Evangelicals fully expect us to fall for this stunt. As I see it even the working premises for the statement are racist, believing that many blacks will stand support homophobia
Its real purpose is to divide many of us who have worked together against the rising tide of white supremacy, and its more palatable version – the alt right, race-based violence, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and other forms of violence. These Evangelicals are really concentrating on them mid-term elections of November 2018. Conversely, we know many justice movements have converged across faith traditions, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and every of the defining characteristic of identity politics. These Evangelicals fully expect us to fall for this stunt. This is a ruse from an antiquated playbook. I hope we don’t fall for the okey-doke this time.
