Black History ‘Erryday’: Happy Birthday Fred Hampton (R.I.P.)

He was initially involved with the NAACP.
He joined the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP).
He negotiated a nonaggression pact between Chicago’s most powerful street gangs.
He developed a class consciousness multi-racial alliance between the BPP, Young Patriots Organization, and the Young Lords.
He was on the FBI’s “Agitator Index” as a “key militant leader.”
He was the Deputy chairman of the National BPP.
A civil lawsuit regarding his death filed in 1970 was settled in 1982 for $1.85 million.
He coined the term “rainbow coalition” later popularized by Rev. Jesse Jackson with his Rainbow coalition.
He was in line for the BPP’s Central Committee’s Chief of Staff before his assassination at age 21.
