German Woman ‘turns’ Black

By Rayiah R

What I want to know is, when did transracial become a trend?  Well, Rachel Dolezal, it’s officially time for you to step aside because we have a new problem. German model Martina Adam, also known as Martina Big because of her insanely huge breast implants and appearances on Botched, has completed her transition into her idea of a “black” woman. According to Atlanta Black Star, “ Big has already darkened her skin, dyed her hair from blonde to black, plumped her lips, got a nose job and enhanced her breasts to weigh 12 pounds.” And to think we thought Dolezal was crazy.

The model explained in April that the darkened look was “from the heart” and claimed she would use the media attention to point out the negative ideas that exist about Black people. Okay, I’m going to stop you right here. I find it funny that she wants to point out the negative ideas about black woman when she’s implementing them herself. No only is she wearing a costume of a black woman and putting on an insulting parade, but she is also expressing her ‘idea’ of the black woman. As African Americans we constantly have this image of us that we can’t seem to shake. No matter how rich or successful, sophisticated and smart, people will constantly see us as aggressors.

Being black and going to a predominantly white school, I’m constantly getting surprised reactions when saying something smart -even with a 3.8 GPA and balancing AP courses- and not being black enough to hang out with ‘my group of people.’ Even from home my cousins would tease me about being a white black girl. On the other side of things, I see many white people with their baggy jeans while walking around saying nigga, because that’s what they think being black is. Because apparently all you need to be black is sagging pants, gold teeth, weed, and slang. Boom! Now you’re black, congratulations. I don’t know how you see black people, but I know that there is way more to us than that.

In a book about racial injustice and prejudice called The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas she says, “It’s dope to be black until its hard to be black.” Big will never understand what it’s like to be feared and hated because of the color of her skin. No amount of cosmetic surgery or makeup will change the fact that she will never know what it’s like to be black. Being black myself I know that you can’t escape it even if you wanted to. So this whole, charade that seems to be spreading and growing needs to stop. Your fake activism and terrible ability to help the black community is unwanted and detested. If you could kindly exit that would be dearly appreciated. Thank you.
