Hmmmmm…For those wondering why Kim Burrell’s words have been met with so much backlash and words that are filled with anger, hate and rage…That’s because anger, hate and rage are rooted in unresolved pain. Many black LGBTQ people who have deep roots or shallow roots in the black church have endured so much pain from the pulpit and the pew. We have become sick and tired of being the whipping boys, the church’s gifted stepchildren and those who have such horrible words directed at us. Now that many of us are daring to study beyond literal interpretation of scripture, we have to faithful to who we are and what we know. We will not be silent anymore. Kim’s words and the way in which they were delivered were the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. MacArthur Flournoy reminded me that the spirit of Fannie Lou Hamer has been summoned, “We are sick and tired of being sick and tired.” In addition, if FB seems riotous today, it should remind you of the words spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King, “Rioting is the language of the unheard.”
Many have not heard our voices. You have wanted to debate and shut us down as opposed to sit and LISTEN. Listen to people who have studied, people who have labored, those who have toiled with this subject matter. Don’t be afraid to have the conversations. If you get met with some vitriol and anger, it’s due to the pain and fear. Remember, black folks are still mad at white people who used the Bible to justify beating us and making us submit to them. Black gay people are going to be mad for a minute. Give us that space.
For those of my brothers and sisters who are sitting in silent anger and fear, remember, your silence will not save you when they come for us. Find peace within yourself and you will discover your voice.
For those of you who have been so wounded by the words spoke Kim, hold on to your hope. Reach out to someone safe who will walk with you in this journey. We are here for you!
I grew in my walk with God when I stopped drinking from the same well that was filled with misguided water. Drink some new water!
You are loved!
