I met Bobby Rivers (via twitter I recall and Eric Hegedus was involved) when he was in San Francisco in 2011, met him for coffee, literally, not a euphemism, and produced a segment with him on Bay Sunday hosted and interviewed by Frank Mallicoat.
Bobby was a VJ and had his own show, Watch Bobby Rivers on VH 1 and interviewed Meryl Streep, Mel Gibson, Sally Fields, Paul McCartney, Kirk Douglas, Carlos Santana, Raul Julia, Michael Caine, Mel Blanc, Jodie Foster, Liza Minnelli, Marlo Thomas, Norman Mailer and more. He spent an hour with Lucille Ball at her home. Robin Williams advised him to be “brave enough to use your own voice”. He has worked with Rosie O’Donnell and Whoopi Goldberg. Tom Hanks called him the “godfather of cable”
Following on the heels of my 3 minutes with Javier Perez, I spoke to Bobby in New York via telephone. I still had his mobile phone number from 5 years ago.
He self-describes as a Black gay guy from South Central L.A. who is Catholic and Democrat. Growing up he wanted to be Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, and more.
He loves social media because he can promote himself via twitter and facebook and be available for other media work. On Facebook under political views he says “I miss JFK, RFK, MLK and now my 401(k)”.
